Are We There Yet?

The little one will be turning three on September 28th! Because I am a plan-ahead kind of person (are you laughing out loud, Rob?), I have already purchased a few things for the big event.... mainly the paper products: plates, napkins and party favor bags. Our theme of course is Dora the Explorer. Rob bought a pinata yesterday. He is concerned that whacking one's favorite cartoon character with a stick might be traumatic later. Or that the rest of our stuffed animals will be recieving their fair share of whacks in the hopes that candy will burst forth from their innards.

Abby has discovered the plates and wants to use them NOW! They have a large picture of Dora right in the middle, so she is in love! I told her we have to save the plates for her party, which is many weeks away. She looked at me suspiciously. "What's this party?" she asks. Me: "There will be cake and ice cream and your friends will come play!" Abby: "What are these friends?" Me: "Your cousins, Emmaline (whom Abby calls Emily-Lion), Sidney, Jake, Hunter, Jordy...." She nodded and went to play.

Ten minutes later she tiptoes into the laundry room where I am ironing and says: "Is my party here yet?" with her eyes glowing and in a whisper voice... that I'm-so-excited voice. I told her we had a long while to wait for her party. She nods and disappears again. Five minutes later she pops her head into the kitchen where I am loading the dishwasher and says: "Is my party here yet?" We replayed this scenario half a dozen times before bed and it made me laugh. Cake, ice cream and friends are worth a little excitement, aren't they?

You'll have to do a 'sleeps' countdown. It will be here in 14 more sleeps.

I lose track what with the international dateline and things, but I think you'll find it's 16 sleeps...as we have a birthday Chez Fairlie in 17 sleeps... Of course, when you're turning 10 (OMG -what a BIG number, where have those years gone?)cake and icecream don't have quite the same attraction as they do for a soon-to-be-three-year-old...but we are counting down nonetheless.

"What are these friends?" cracked me up. Poor love. Time is not an easy concept to the under-3 brigade.

It's such a great age isn't it, they come out with the funniest things :)
She's going to feel so special when it eventually arrives :)

I love September - Margot's and my birthdays and our wedding anniversary. I too love "what are these friends?"
But the spookiest thing - today Margot and her friends took a stick to a

DORA PINATA!!!!!!!!

One year we friends and assembled kiddies had a Santa pinata, nothing like beating the crap out of the man that brings the prezies. The thing would not crack, the kids were getting exhausted, at one point we had to distract the kids with a "Oh my goodness what is that over there!" while Andrew took to it, like a Soprano's goon, with a broom handle.

My advice pre soften the pinata.

I was giving a 'sleeps' example - not actually counting them. (I couldn't remember from the blog screen to the comment screen) Sorry I should have qualified that before I began!!

Oh Tracey, we are counting down. I think J.T. is ready to start the Christmas countdown! (Damn those stupid commercials).

Mary, I hope those kids had fun beating Dora.... did you join in? Was it therapeutic?

Sussanah, I can't believe Andrew whacked Santa! What's his mob name?

I have never seen a Pinata break gracefully. It always ends up dad or Uncle Steve (with a couple of ales under his belt) that drags it down and bashes the thing senseless on the ground (while still hanging onto the beer in his other hand)until a jelly bean pokes its head out of the only hole he could make. All while the darling little kiddies, who are yet to be subjected to such violence, watch on and scream "GO UNCCA STEVE, HIT IT, BASH IT, OH LOOK, THERE'S A JELLY BEAN, IT'S MINE! NOOOOOO, AMYYYYY, IT'S MINE, MUUUUUUMM....."

As for your last comment, "Cake, ice cream and friends are worth a little excitement, aren't they?"...I couldn't agree more!

So cute. We had a pinata for my Middle Monkey's 3rd birthday, only it rained, so we had it on the floor in the lounge, actually it was easier to bash that way.

Cake alone is excitement enough for me Aunty. Wouldn't it have been funny if that had been a gummy worm instead of a jelly bean? Don't you think this beating cartoon characters until they burst thing is a little sick? More money in the therapy jar!

Hey, I was there....Andrew really did beat the crap out of Santa. In fact, I am sure I have pictures somewhere...stay tuned for an upcoming post! I think Suss gave very sound advice in beating the pinata pre- kids attempts. Hey, it's our job to ensure that a freaking pinata doesn't mess with their self esteem!
