Yes We Can!

For every American who is sick of the same old Washington politics that have led our economy into the ditch, our young men into a war that might never end, and have driven our national debt into the trillions... yes we can affect change for our country. Hope is on the horizon for my generation.

J.T. voted for Obama at the school "election." Another child told him he couldn't vote for Obama because he was black. Looks like we still have a lot of work to do.

But for today, one bridge has been crossed, others are being built and the possibilities are bubbling beneath our feet and onto the path towards the future.

School election? I must say Americans really publicize their allegiances openly. Aussies, being intraverted souls, tend not to talk about who they vote for (although our last election was different). It floors me that kids would declare their allegiance to a party at school. But, I guess it's healthier than not.

Good on you for sticking to your political guns in what must've been a politically hostile environment for you guys in the deep south!

Yeah, what M said.

From a completely removed position, I watched with fascination each state and the colour it turned as the results came in. Nice bed of red you were resting on there! The southern states weren't going to let go too easily I think.

You are right. Still a lot of work to do, but I reckon you are heading in the right direction.

And just give that racist kid a slapping for me will you please?

and now agreeing with Aunty!

My Dad always taught me to never discuss politics unless you're ready to fight. No one really wants to "debate" politics. They either want you to agree with them completely or ridicule you if you oppose their view. Its all very tiring.

your sense of joy / relief is palable.

I actually got a shock when I heard the news announce that Obama was the first African American president. That fact had become completely irrelevant to me AGES ago. I had forgotten his colour and only heard his voice.

I hope that happens to you guys too.

Exactly Tracey. When I think of our president-elect the qualities that come to mind are: compassionate, intelligent, articulate, friendly and bold. I don't think about the tone of his skin at all. Isn't that what judging people should be about... character instead of stereotype?
